History

The surrounding area is steeped in history and lore of the cowboys and was historically a favored hunting and camping ground of Cheyenne, Sioux, Pawnee and Arapahoe Indians.

Nearby Chappell was platted in 1884 when the Union Pacific Railroad extended its line to the area, establishing a station that became the nucleus of the town. The town was named after Charles Henry Chappell, a railroad official responsible for building the train depot. The first permanent resident and station agent was John O'Neil, who also taught the first school in the depot, marking the beginning of formal education in what is now Deuel County.
